Indian Summer

Dumbledore
I seem to be updating about once a week these days, so here goes:

Things that are making me happy: All Clear is out and waiting for me on my Kindle. Ditto Cryoburn. If you like Bujold you should know that the first edition of the book comes with a CD that includes *all* the Vorkosigan novels in multiple formats, including html, rtf, and mobi(which works fine on Kindle). Plus various snippets and interviews and such written by Bujold. Her account of what happened when she discovered slash had me giggling.

I've been indulgent or lucky lately with yarn and now have some Bugga (autumn tiger beetle) and Madeline Tosh Pashmina (composition book grey)to enjoy. If you don't know what that means, well, yummy hand dyed merino/cashmere smooshiness. The Bugga's going in the travel bag along with socks for Hans who brought lots and lots of sock yarn back from Germany this summer so that I could make him more socks.

Seen at Hot Topic yesterday: lightsaber lipbalm. Now I know why Steve Sansweet can leave LFL; the Star Ladies' work is done. Also available in Anakin and Yoda. Yoda lips?!??? And Pottery Barn Kids has some new SW stuff in their kids' range, including a truly cool xwing/tie fighter quilt.

I am finally, I think, caving and retiring the Sony of Doom, the ultralight laptop that I've used for travel (off and on) since 2004. Off and on because it belongs to my employer and so hasn't always been available to me. I could replace it with the current comparable Sony, but this year's equipment budget didn't extend that far at work. So instead I'm trying out an HP Mini from Costco; it weighs more but costs about 75% less, which is a decent tradeoff given that I'm paying for it myself. The 90 day return policy should mean I have time to give it a decent workout.

Thanks to last week's class I can now spin thick yarn and thick bumpy yarn!

Things that are making me less-than-happy:

Spent hours at the DMV this week sorting out my drivers' license. I ordered the replacement online but the DMV for reasons known only to themselves ignored my actual address and sent the license to Bburg. Since they don't forward mail, the result is that I had to go get a new license in person.

I need to get Office 2010 on Myfanwy-the-Mini. (shut up. The big laptop is Toshiko to the network because it make me giggle, so of course the phone is iAnto and the mini will need to be Myfanwy.) This would be simple if the Microsoft home use codes were working, but they aren't. And I am pondering whether to tether to my phone, install a wireless router at mom's, or just head over to Starbucks (or my brother's) as needed.

Ahhh, the trivia of my life!

Love the lightsaber lip balm!

And Myfanwy-the-Mini cracks me up. In her honor, beautiful male voices, in formal fashion -- Rhydian Roberts, Bryn Terfel, *and* Only Men Aloud:

Ack, I have to hear Lois talking about The Slash! And I have Cryoburn on my to-buy list on Amazon, so as not to forget it. :)

My mom has been looking for some very soft yarn since Hobby Lobby stopped carrying it. What kind of stores would you suggest looking for in town-- or do you buy online?

what kind of yarn does she mean by 'very soft'? Because if she's looking for the eyelashy sorts of yarn, they're out of fashion and so hard to find.

Michael's, Jo-Ann, and AC Moore are the other 'big box' craft stores. If your mom wants to try out the (more expensive but better quality) world of yarn, Mass Ave Knit Shop is one I've visited in Indianapolis.

I'm not sure exactly what she means, 'cause I'm yarn-ignorant. Probably not hte eyelashy stuff! She just used to get a very nice, very soft yarn from Hobby Lobby for afghans, and they stopped carrying it. I guess she hasn't been able to find it at any of the other usual suspects (Michael's, JoAnn). I can always suggest popping by that yarn shop some time, just to see. Thank you!

Ok, probably a worsted weight acrylic and there are several options out there if she wants to try them, including options at Michael's. If she hasn't been there lately she should check it out again, they switch yarn suppliers fairly often and she may like some of the new stuff better than what they were carrying before.

I like Berroco Comfort quite a bit (very soft, acrylic/nylon blend, lots of colors). Berroco isn't carried by the big-box stores; she might want to call the specialty yarn shops to see if they carry it. Plymouth Encore is a machine washable wool/acrylic blend that is another yarn shop standby.

I wonder if the Yoda Lips is, perhaps, a mint flavored version of the balm. Their packaging did not specify such things, so one must guess.

And, oh look, PBKids has ESB sheets now too!

I love hearing about the little things.

That lightsaber lip balm looks awesome! Must seek it out.
